Sacred Grove 7/21/26 FRUIT SALAD
a veritable garden of delights…
join us in the sacred grove during this hot and languid summer day to enjoy fruits of all kinds!!! we are making a fruit salad with only the finest selections from korea, the US, albania, iran, italy, brazil and more. fruit songs only!!!!
fruits can also tell us about the history of human migration, nourishment, trade, and power. the portokall (the albanian word for orange, directly referencing the country portugal) reminds us that portuguese traders introduced the orange to many countries including much of the ottoman empire during the 15/16 centuries. similar words are used in romania, greece/cyprus, bulgaria, turkey, iran and afghanistan.
“anar” (pomegranate in farsi) became “nar” in turkish, which spread through southern europe through ottoman influence
we also talk about breadfruit and its history as a “weapon” — a malay fruit traded among pacific nations, brought to the caribbean by european colonizers in the 1700s to cheaply feed enslaved labor. to read jamaica kincaid’s writing, which i mentioned on the show: The Breadfruit | The Harvard Advocate
