EXT SRC 67 / In-N-Out / 07.08.26
A few weeks ago I spent a week in Los Angeles. I hadn’t visited since the 90’s, but the city felt oddly familiar. That’s in part thanks to all of the west coast underground hip-hop I absorbed over the years, especially in my high school and early college days.
The obsession started with Jurassic 5 after hearing their track “Improvise” on the Jet Grind Radio soundtrack. From there I fell into a rabbit hole, finding my way to labels like Quannum, Stones Throw, and Hieroglyphics Imperium. I had the documentary Scratch on repeat. My parents bought me two turntables and a mixer—the beginning of my DJ aspirations.
This playlist spans from 1998 through the Bush era to 2011, when TDE and Brainfeeder were just getting started. I didn’t dig too deeply outside of my own CD collection, highlighting some of my favorite tracks that I haven’t heard in decades.
