Womyn of the Century with DJ Miss Kitty
In honor of International Women’s Women’s Day on March 8th AND because we still have work to do to gain representation parity on the airwaves, DJ Miss Kitty is spinning two hours of all women artists from the end of the 20th century between 1975-1999. According to a 2025 study by the School of Communication and Journalism at USC Annenberg, women artists are seeing slow progress in music industry representation, comprising 37.7% of the Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart in 2024. While female artists are gaining streaming presence (especially in pop), they remain underrepresented, with only 18.9% of songwriters and 5.9% of producers being women in 2024.
Key findings on the representation of women in music from the study:
- Production and Songwriting: Women are severely underrepresented behind the scenes. In 2024, only 5.9% of producers were women. Furthermore, just 18.9% of songwriters in 2024 were women.
- Genre Disparities: Women are most frequently represented in pop music, accounting for 63.4% of top artists in that genre in 2024. They are less represented in genres like country and hip-hop.
- Industry Hurdles: Women in the industry often face discrimination and are underrepresented in technical roles, such as live sound engineers (15%) and studio/mastering engineers (12%).
