Inspired by last night’s Karaoke at Richmond’s beloved Lakeside Tavern.

Karaoke machines made their first appearances in Japan in the 1970s. The word Karaoke literally means “empty orchestra”. The word combines the Japanese word “kara” (空), meaning “empty,” and “oke” (オケ), a shortened form of the word for “orchestra” (オーケストラ). The term describes a form of entertainment where a singer performs along with pre-recorded music that lacks the original lead vocal, effectively creating an “empty orchestra” for the singer to fill.
