Richmond Counterculture/ Shockoe Sessions Ep 9

Mon, Sep 8, 2025

Shockoe Sessions Live is a live, weekly concert series celebrating Richmond’s goldmine of musicianship!

For this episode we’re featuring the darker side of Shockoe Sessions Live! with Dorthia Cottrell, Mister Earthbound, and Future Projektor.

Dorthia Cottrell

Across both her solo work and as the vocalist of renowned doom band Windhand, DORTHIA COTTRELL envisions her music as both a document of love and a reconciliation with death. On her latest album, Death Folk Country, Cottrell wards off death through creation – the most distilled form of love. The spirit of love passed on through her words will be the ultimate reward for earthly suffering. Cottrell’s enigmatic presence guides listeners down a path of introspection – Death Folk Country’s massive scope touches upon tales of love, loss, and so much more.

Cottrell’s voice, a quavering alto, fills the emptiest of canyons. Singing in echoing harmony with itself, her voice is a kind of prophecy, bringing home to the present thoughts and realizations from the future, even as Cottrell buries herself in remembrance of the past.

Mister Earthbound

A Swamp Rock n’ Roll quartet out of Richmond, Virginia, MISTER EARTHBOUND blends the psychedelic tones of the 13th Floor Elevators and the raucous early days of Pentagram with the eerie blues of Screaming Jay Hawkins. Since forming in the winter of 2016, the group has shared the stage with DEAD MEADOW, MONOLORD, KADAVAR and many other sonic titans in their realm. With the release of a SPLIT EP via DECKHEAD RECORDS in January 2020, they hit the road for a southeast US tour. After returning, they were featured in EMBASSY SKATEBOARDS “WINTER WARRIORS” video. The quartet’s single, THE GREAT SILENCE, shows the progression of the act with their new and stronger than ever lineup. Their debut full length album, SHADOW WORK, is streaming now on all platforms, with vinyl coming soon from KOZMIK ARTIFACTZ.
