Hermano migrante
Larry Bellorín left Venezuela’s intolerable conditions for the chance of a new life in the USA. Joe Troop came back to the states after a decade evangelizing bluegrass music in South America. Their chance meeting during the pandemic has led to one of the most unique, exciting bands in roots music today: Larry & Joe.
Larry is a virtuoso of his home country’s llanera harp, Joe is likewise on the banjo, and each plays a handful of other instruments. Their music adds a new dialect to the already multicultural language that is the folk music of the Americas.
Larry & Joe will perform here in Richmond at Révéler Experiences on Tuesday July 15, produced by Secret Planet Richmond. This week I’ll feature the music of Larry & Joe when I fill in for the vacationing Eric Walters on Wide Ear Folk.
You’ll also hear new songs and tunes by Brian Eno & Beatie Wolfe, Brivele, Donald WG Lindsay and Brighde Chaimbeul; a tribute to the late Michael Hurley; Peter Stampfel singing James Bond; some Tom Waits pieces inspired by seeing the Waits tribute band Get Behind the Mule last week; and of course more.
