Transmitting from the past to a future that never was…
AKA: 56 kilobits per second, 56 kbps
Exploration into how technology has influenced music production, distribution and discovery—especially alongside the advent of home computers and the Internet. 56 kbit/s is the maximum theoretical transfer rate of dial-up modems. 56 kbit/s modems were widely available (and practical) to the consumer market as of 1998.
“The Internet is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability, a mechanism for
information dissemination, and a medium for collaboration and interaction
between individuals and their computers without regard for geographic location.”
– Internet Society (1997)
