Richmond Counterculture / Shockoe Sessions
Richmond Counterculture/Shockoe Sessions Episode 30
Shockoe Sessions Live! is a weekly show highlighting Richmond’s music scene. Every Tuesday a different local act plays for an intimate studio audience of up to 50 people.
Shows are recorded and streamed live to YouTube.
Featuring Giant Squid, The Potted Plants, and League of Space Pirates!
About the Bands
Boiling up from the depths of middle Earth, Giant Squid! emerges erect and unafraid on a magnificent steed, delivering a raging slab of ass kick to those who need it most.
Equal parts 80s hardcore and 70’s am radio pablum, Giant Squid! provides what the audience needs, not what they want. A four- piece juggernaut founded on matching costumes, smoke machines, industrial videos and lyrical insanity, Giant Squid! has the tastiest licks, the biggest nuts and the superfly bitches.
Giant Squid! brings a sweet satisfaction to your boring life, a satisfaction not found through a Carmax BMW or an Island vacation paraded in front of your Facebook friends. Only the Squid can fill your empty soul.
Our moms tell us Giant Squid! is riffilicous and has a great personality. We started doing this in 2008 because we were bored.

The Potted Plants fuse whimsy and eccentricity. They write music that makes you think, but not too much. The kind of music that leaves you wondering “Who hurt you?” but also giggling a little like “Nice, at least you made something fun with that.”

Described as “GWAR meets the B-52’s, raised by Buck Rogers,” League of Space Pirates is a band of interstellar scallywags blasting high-energy rock-and-roll straight from the 25th Century. Led by the enigmatic Captain Orlok, the crew of the Detritus fronts a sonic battle against the tyranny of Übercorp. Created by artist Noah Scalin, this multivalent, transmedia collective delivers rebellious grooves and theatrical chaos in service of saving the galaxy!
League of Space Pirates features humans Captain Orlok and Chroma on vocals, Rusty on guitar & bass, and Pavo Cristatus on Drums, as well as animate meat creature Mungo on bass & guitar, synthetic humanoid Parrot on keys and of course our sentient satellite P1-KLS (AKA Pickles) on electric ukulele, because why not?
