Richmond Counterculture / Shockoe Sessions
Richmond Counterculture/Shockoe Sessions Episode 24
Shockoe Sessions Live! is a weekly show highlighting Richmond’s music scene. Every Tuesday a different local act plays for an intimate studio audience of up to 50 people.
Shows are recorded and streamed live to YouTube.
This week we jam out to Kenneka Cook, The Wayward Leaves, and Zarove!
About the Bands
Singer, songwriter, and musician Kenneka Cook combines classic jazz, neo-soul, and cosmopolitan pop in a melodically rich manner that reflects inspirations including Billie Holiday, Erykah Badu, the Cardigans, and Vampire Weekend.
As a youngster, the Richmond, Virginia native nurtured her talent at school and in church. During college, she started recording a cappella material with a laptop, and later had something of a creative epiphany after seeing Reggie Watts perform with a looping pedal. Acquiring a pedal of her own enabled her to layer multiple vocal and percussion tracks for recordings, including a version of Cole Porter’s “Night and Day,” and performances.

The Wayward Leaves is a project from Ross Wright (Rebekah Rafferty & the Wakes, IONNA) and Curtis Wayne Patton (David Shultz and the Skyline) which fuses catchy pop songwriting with acoustic guitar and pedal steel. Ross and Curtis are joined by friends from the RVA music scene to round out a big, dynamic sound.

Zarove is an instrumental trio from Richmond, VA, formed in 2024. Zarove fuses decades of collective experience in Bulgarian and Middle Eastern traditions, avant-garde art music, rock, and improvisation. Traditional Turkish instruments meet electric fret less bass and a hand-crafted drum kit in songs that meld genres, rhythms, and borders.
