Sam Mangwana

WELCOME!

Saturday February 21, 2926, marked the 81st birthday of the great singer, composer & band leader Sam Mangwana.

He was born to Angolan parents in 1945 in Kinshasa, known then by the colonial name of Leopoldville. He’s still with us here on Earth. The last live performance I’ve seen was in 2021 in celebration of his album LUBAMBA of 2016.

I’ll start with a couple of more contemporary songs from others for the younger listeners, but…

Today I’ll be featuring music with and by Sam for greater part of the program. It’ll be a my great pleasure to present music from the many decades of his career, music with his distinctive voice and style that has brought many decades of delight to me via my ears and my dancing shoes.
From Los Batchichos to African Fiesta, from Vox Africa to TP OK Jazz, from African All Stars to his years of solo albums and other collaborative efforts, well try to cover at least part of his impressive career.

Many people are familiar with and love his music. I’ll try to spin some favorites along with a few of his more rare tracks.
