POP Goes The World! / What the Fontaine?!
PGTW Presents “Cookies For Satan: The Best of 2020” (rewind)
We’re scheduled to start broadcasting live from our new building tomorrow morning, so for my last prerecorded show we’ll end our run of some of my favorite “Best Of” shows with what may very well be my favorite “Best Of” show since I’ve been at WRIR.
The year was 2020, and the country had effectively shut down amid covid and the George Floyd tragedy.
The entire year was an existential crises, and without trying to sound too glib, the Harry Lime quote from “The Third Man” kept repeating itself in my head.
“You know what the fellow said – in Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance.
In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace – and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.”
A cynical commentary on art vs. morality, to be sure, and yet musically, 2020 kept delivering, in my opinion, the most musically solid year since I’ve been at WRIR, at the very least, since 2007.
A collection of songs so reflective of 2020 that collectively they could only be called “Cookies For Satan”!
I’m also pleased to announce that when we come back live, Fontaine and I will be alternating weeks in this time slot, and I couldn’t think of anyone more suited to share this time slot with me than her!
PGTW AND WTF 4 eva!
