#148: signs of after (with yaz lancaster, NYC)

Absolutely honored and humbled to host this offering by my guest tonight, Yaz Lancaster.
And yes, that is an x-ray of their violin.
Yaz Lancaster (they/them) is an experimental artist whose practice is grounded in queer, DIY, and liberatory frameworks. Their work utilizes electroacoustic composition, sampling/collage, and improvisation. Cultivation of care and intimacy, post-genre collaboration are priorities of their artistic ethos. Yaz performs solo sets with violin/voice/electronics that comprise songs, improvisations, and composed music; and as “death ambient” project medium. (in collaboration with gg200bpm). They are a member of NYC-based and communally-active PTP Vision artist collective; and the creator/curator of HEAVY HEARTS performance series celebrating the community and vulnerability in harsh/experimental sonics. Sophomore album AFTER (PTP, released Nov 7) was created while in-residence at Pioneer Works in winter 2025.
About the mix:
on AFTER, i explore themes of dreams and dreaming, and truths. i’m interested in dreams because it’s where our subconscious emotions live.
i have a lot of big feelings, that for various life reasons, i’d been repressing often this past year. i also struggle with rumination, which can make things harder. the album lives in the space where those of us who deal with negative feedback loops are able to decipher how we actually feel, what we actually need, and how to face the reality that comes after.
the music where i’m able to “feel” the most – whether it be positive or negative – has always been heavy, emo, harsh, and/or noisy. <3
