What Wakes Me Up 13 Richmond’s Fresh Water Springs
What Wakes Me Up is the fact that Water Is Life. Humans can live for only a few days without it. Potable water is in short supply around the world. If you live in Central Virginia, you are aware that Richmond’s water purification plant was down for almost 5 days in January 2025 and again for almost 3 days in May. It’s not just poor and wartorn countries that struggle with infrastrucure failure. Heads up.
Richmond is built around a number of natural springs that tap into the aquifer under the bedrock of the area. Most of these water resources have been sealed and neglected for years.
Fact is that now that these springs are not in use, millions of gallons of clear water from our aquifers drain directly into storm sewers and into the James River. I suspect that Richmond is not the only municipality this is happening. The Richmond Springs Collective is working to preserve, reopen and care for our natural water supply. Members are trying to work with the city, state and nonprofits to figure out how to get the job done. We took some time to record this episode so you will know about the efforts and participate in the work.
